Symbolism is the world’s oldest language, the common background of humanity.
This artistic movement comes from the end 19th century. It is a reaction to naturalism, the symbols achieve the higher reality of sensitivity and inspire poetic imagination. Symbolist works are inspired by the spirituality, imagination and dreams.
Symbolism culminates in all fields of creation. The literature expresses its particularity, prior to the music and the visual arts.
Symbolism is not addressed in relation to the man, but to the mind, and imagination that he is able to conjure. Symbolist artist rejected realism and naturalism or materialist views that were the basis.
It sought the reality beyond outward appearances to find the inner essence of things. In this attraction to the spiritual, symbolism is an idealist art, spiritualizing, « revealing the infinite ». The idea of the unspeakable or the absolute, the symbol becomes the ultimate form of expression. The symbol allows an indirect approach and evocative of the mysterious essence of things.
Symbolism is not only a style but a way of looking at life, an art form that expresses a mood and draws from this purpose an arsenal of internationally recognisable, recurring themes and motifs.
